Foreword
I do not imagine that this present volume will be of interest to a wide range of readers. I do anticipate, however, that the majority of readers will be those of my close circle of family and friends.
Indeed, this book is about them, my inner circle, who are my flesh and blood. They are the ones who will read with their unique prejudice and judgments, with their expectations not having been met. However, I want them to know that I reflected upon their lives with love and respect.
On the other hand, I do not anticipate the present book will be read by my most important readers - my grandchildren, as well the generations that will follow. If they should read, they may be intrigued with their past, this shared gift, and upon reading may they look upon us with more insight, warmth, and even understanding.
A stranger may encounter this book and, drawn in by the lives of ordinary people, gain a deeper understanding of an extraordinary time, an epoch that has not completely past from memory: the turbulence of 20th century Russia.
